KATAYORI

A name should be more than a label.

It should represent an idea.

KATAYORI comes from the Japanese word 偏り, meaning deviation, bias, imbalance or a shift away from an expected state.

For us, one interpretation stood above all:

Deviation.

And that became the foundation of KATAYORI.

DEVIATION AS AN IDENTITY

In a world built around standards, deviation is usually considered something negative.

Something is measured.
A reference is defined.
And anything outside of it becomes an irregularity.

We see it differently.

Deviation creates distinction.

It is the difference between following an existing path and creating your own. Between reproducing what already exists and questioning what something could become.

KATAYORI represents the conscious decision to move away from the expected.

Not simply to be different.

But to create without being restricted by what is considered normal.

BETWEEN PRECISION AND IMPERFECTION

This idea is reflected throughout the visual world of KATAYORI.

Industrial structures meet organic forms. Heavy materials meet delicate details. Precise construction exists alongside distortion, irregularity and imperfection.

These contrasts are intentional.

We are fascinated by objects and environments that carry evidence of how they were created - exposed structures, raw metal, scratches, seams, distorted forms and surfaces shaped by time.

Things that are not perfectly uniform often carry the strongest identity.

That tension between precision and imperfection has become part of our design language.

WHY JAPAN?

Japanese culture and design have been an important source of inspiration for the world surrounding KATAYORI.

Not as something to simply reproduce, but as a perspective.

The relationship between simplicity and complexity. The appreciation of materials. The beauty found in imperfection. The balance between traditional references and radical contemporary design.

KATAYORI takes these influences and combines them with an entirely different world: industrial culture, metal, underground aesthetics and contemporary fashion.

The result exists somewhere between them.

And that space in between is exactly where we want KATAYORI to exist.
